SC Lt. Governor Andre Bauer Says Welfare Is Like Feeding Stray Animals

A South Carolina politician is making very a public apology – and this time it’s not Governor Mark Sanford.
After likening welfare recepients to stray animals, Andre Bauer, the embattled Republican’s lieutenant governor, is hastily back-pedalling from remarks his rivals have called “immoral.”
“My grandmother was not a highly educated woman, but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals,” he said during a Town Hall meeting on Thursday.
“You know why? Because they breed! You’re facilitating the problem if you give an animal or a person ample food supply. They will reproduce, especially ones that don’t think too much further than that.”
Bauer hopes to ascend to the state’s highest seat in November’s election, where he would succeed the sex-scandal scarred Mark Sanford, who’s affair with an Argentine mistress made him the butt of late-night talk
The 40-year-old was quickly targeted by Democratic rivals for the remarks.
“I am disgusted by these comments,” said state Sen. Vincent Sheheen. “His comments were immoral and out of line.”
South Carolina schools Superintendent Jim Rex labeled them “reprehensible.”
No stranger to firing off intemperate remarks, Bauer has offered something of an apology.
“Do I wish I’d used a different metaphor? Of course,” he said. “I didn’t intend to offend anyone.”
Despite his choice of words, Bauer noted he feels welfare recipients should be required to submit to drug tests and attend parent-teacher conferences if they have kids in school.

The sad part is I agree. I grew up on welfare and I watched a lot of people bilk the system. Right now this day I know of people that party and live like the world owes them something and for every new baby they have they get an increase. I am a black man so you cant call me a racist; this man aint lying. Him being white is the issue and that is killing our country. This politically correct crap is BULL$H!T. That man spoke the truth plain and simple. Get a job stop!!!!!! There is no reason healthy young people cant/wont work! Yes I grew up in the worse of the worse conditions, but wanting better made me work hard. I dont know his reasons for the statements, but mine are for an empowering movement. We are better than a once a month check and foodstamps, but until someone makes that known and cuts these people off the tit this will continue. Its ruining us as a country.

To the fruitcake who posted that he is black and can’t be racist that’s bullshit. First of all yes there are SOME people who abuse the system but there are many others who need government help because jobs are not hiring.
I worked every day of my life even got a college degree yet I have been un-employed for two years doing anything to survive. I work and then things get slow and they lay personal off.
Not everyone like this politician grew up with a golden spoon in their mouth. Companies are closing down and sending jobs overseas leaving many people unemployed.
Do you honestly think that with 8+ dollars an hours people can live? Gas is $3.00 a gallon, food is expensive, insurance is high, etc.
Some people truly try, heck it’s 5 in the morning and I’m still up reading trying to further my education and send these resumes out for future jobs.
Done here
peace

I feel that Andre should have worded his speech differently, but I agree with his message. Our government is breeding a culture of dependency. It is positively rewarding behaviors that shouldn’t be rewarded. I have no problem with someone receiving welfare on a temporary basis to get through the rough times. I also don’t have a problem with someone receiving help if they work full time but still can’t afford a place to live in or food to eat. However, I have a problem with people that abuse the system. I haven’t always loved the job I had. I have worked two jobs at different points in my life. I have done this because I needed money to support myself. I don’t feel that anyone with good health should get welfare if they can find a job, any job, not just their dream job. After getting married, my husband and I only had two children. Why? Because that is all that we could afford to have. Our government rewards single parents with more money and low interest home loans. Where are the rewards for the people that behave responsibly and live within their means? Oh yeah, we get to pay higher taxes to support those that don’t. I agree with drug testing for those on welfare. If you don’t use drugs, you shouldn’t have a problem with being tested. If you have money to blow on drugs, you don’t need a welfare check. I agree that parents, all parents, should have to visit their children’s schools and get to know their teachers. Parents that support their children through school have children that do better in school.
