There’s a new push underway encouraging young boys to get the HPV vaccine because of oral sex.

Doctors say the act has been linked to increased cases of throat cancer caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI).

Initially, the call for boys to get the vaccine was met with resistance, but cases of HPV-related oral cancers are up thirty percent in the last two decades.

The CDC says on of the signs of HPV-related problems is RRP, which causes warts to grow in the throat and can block the airway and cause a hoarse voice and difficulty breathing.

They also say a person can have HPV even if several years have passed since sexual contact has occurred with an affected partner. They say most infected people don’t even know they are infected.
