Mayor Bloomberg’s Budget Cuts Mean Less Food For Rikers Island Inmates

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s planned budget cuts could affect both parking and prisoners in the city.
Under the mayor’s plan, there would be no more chocolate or vanilla pudding on the menu for inmates at Riker’s Island, WCBS 880′s Sophia Hall reported.

And it’s not just the desserts that are on the chopping block for the cell block. The menu could also cut back on the carbs for prisoners.
Currently, inmates get eight slices of bread a day, but under the new proposal, they would get only six, Hall reported.
The cutbacks to bread and pudding would save the city about $350,000.
Another part of the budget plan would affect parking meter rates.
New Yorkers could see a rate hike of around 50 cents an hour in certain areas of the city during busier times of the day.
The increase is expected to cost slightly less in residential areas.
