STANFIELD, Ariz. – Pinal County sheriff’s deputies discovered bundles of marijuana inside an SUV following a pursuit outside of Stanfield Monday night.

According to sheriff’s spokesman Tim Gaffney, a deputy in the area of Interstate 8 and Highway 84 saw a Chevy Suburban traveling northbound in a southbound lane at approximately 9 p.m.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed and went off-road through the desert.

Gaffney said the deputy pursued the Suburban until the driver lost control and the vehicle became disabled in a ditch. Three Hispanic males ran into the desert and were not located.

Deputies discovered a large quantity of marijuana bundles inside the SUV. According to Gaffney, the marijuana weighed approximately 1,500 pounds and had a street value of $750,000.

The vehicle was seized and is being held for proof of ownership.
