South Carolina authorities have charged a woman with atrocity animal callousness, saying she hanged a pit bull owned by her nephew from a tree using an electrical cord and set fire on its body because the dog chewed on her Bible.

The officers of animal control said on Monday that Miriam Smith, 65, told them she killed a female pit bull named Diamond because it was a “devil dog” and she was afraid it would threaten neighborhood children. Authorities said bond wasn’t immediately set for the old lady, who stays in jail in Spartanburg County after her arrest on weekend.

The officials said she didn’t have any lawyer yet. If convicted, she has to face 180 days to five years in prison.

Authorities say the remains of the dog were discovered under a pile of grass with part of an electrical cord around its neck.
