Several women in Fairfax County are finding a sharp surprise while shopping.

Fairfax County police are looking for a Hispanic man they said slashed a woman on her buttocks at an area mall Monday afternoon.

The 18-year-old victim told police she noticed several clothes falling from a rack behind her while shopping at the Forever XXI store, located in Fair Oaks Mall near the U.S. 50 and Interstate 66 interchange about 5:30 p.m., police said.

She told police she saw a man pick up the fallen clothes, and then she felt a “sharp pain” in her hindquarters, Fairfax County police said.

At first, the victim believed it was just a coat hanger that hit her backside, but she soon realized that the rear of her denim shorts had been sliced, Fairfax County police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said.

Upon further inspection, the victim realized that her butt was cut and bleeding, police said.

She quickly informed employees of the wound, about an inch and a half long, and they then contacted police.

By then, the culprit was gone.

Police say it isn’t the first time a man matching a similar description has attacked in the same way.

Detectives have dubbed the man an “apparent serial cutter.” They say he has struck five times since February, and all of his victims have been in their teens or early 20s.

The last attack before Monday’s was June 20 about 2:45 p.m. at the Marshall’s department store at the nearby Greenbriar Shopping Center, located close to the U.S. 50 and Va. 28 interchange.

Caldwell said that the other attacks occurred on June 18 at the H&M at Tysons Corner Mall, May 15 at the Ann Taylor store at Fair Oaks Mall, and Feb. 14 at the Champs, also at Fair Oaks Mall.

In all of the cases, the attacker distracts the woman, then slashes them when, and where, they least expect it.

Former FBI profiler Gregg McCrary said the attacks most likely won’t stop until the culprit is captured.

The offender, he said, appears to have a sexual disorder known as piquerism, meaning the attacker gets sexual gratification from stabbing, pricking or cutting with a sharp object.

The assailant, who police described as in his 20s, has likely done something similar before, McCrary said.

“He’s driven to this,” he said. “If he’s in his late 20s, this is a little late for it to be his first time out. Chances are he’s done something like this before. Police, I’m sure, are going to go back and look for similar crimes.”

McCrary said it’s hard to tell if the offender’s crimes will escalate into even more violent attacks.

“The dangerous thing here is he’s actually hurting women,” he said. “He’s already crossed that threshold into physical contact. But this is a good news-bad news situation. He’ll just keep doing this until he’s caught and by keeping on doing this, he’ll caught.”

McCrary said the offender’s past relationships could help lead police to his identity.

“What you have sometimes in these cases are guys who have tried to do this with a girlfriend or compliant victim,” he said. “If there’s anyone who has experienced a similar thing in a consensual relationship, they need to call the cops and give them a lead on that guy.”

Police said that the attacker is a heavyset Hispanic man in his late 20s around 5 feet 6 inches tall.

In Monday’s slashing, he wore white shorts and a short-sleeved shirt.
