forbezdvd.com co-owner doggie diamonds recently had a chance to chop it up with artist donny goines. he told me he wanted to chop it up with donny because every time he saw him, he was always humble and showed his love for his craft. donny goines has been on various websites and really grinds without that major co-signed from a major artist or entity. if you’re familiar with donny goines, he’s always saying “ichaban” and now finally someone asked him what the hell that means lol.

people the interview below…

1. Who Is Donny Goines?

Honestly, I am you. I’m the dude standing on the corner. I’m the guy working a nine to 5. I’m the kid who grew up listening to Biggie and Pac. In short, I’m the “every man” MC. I like to think of myself as a working class artist who loves the culture. That’s probably the best way to describe me.

2. Break Down The Name Once Again, Because I Know People Do A Double Take When They See It.

For those who may not know, my name is partly inspired by a famous urban author named Donald Goines. In short, my first name is Donny. Spelling and all. When I decided to become an artist I wanted to incorporate my birth name into my stage name and after months of contemplation the name Donny Goines was suggested to me. I thought it fit me well because of the type of stories Donald Goines wrote, the similarities we shared and also naming myself after a positive black male made sense to me.

3. Hip-Hop Is Labeled With So Many Classification (Like Gangster, Trap,Hipster,Swag,Backpack) What Is The Correct Label For You?

That’s for the people to decide. I really don’t like to box myself in with labels, mainly because I feel I am many different things embodied in one person. I’m a Backpacker, I’m a Gangster, I’m a Hipster, so on and so forth. It just depends on the day to be honest with you.

4. Should There Be Labels In Hip-Hop?

In my opinion, no. I feel like labels limit the artist and also the expectations of present or future fans. I personally prefer to be classified as myself, no one can be me nor can they duplicate anyone else. They are only imitations of the previous, so I’m a firm believer in doing things as you see fit. Labels are too confining, there’s no freedom to step outside the box.

5. Speaking On Labels, Titles And Names, What The Hell Is Ichiban?

The definition means number one or the best in Japanese. This is the first single from my upcoming album Success Served Cold and it coincides with the mentality and vibe of the project’s theme overall. Bottom line, I’m striving to be the greatest. Period.

6. From A Creative Standpoint, Do You Fear Sometimes The Fans Might Not Get What You’re Saying?

No, not really. I just do whatever I feel whenever I feel like it. If people don’t get it then its not for them. If they do understand, then that means they are meant to receive the message. Not every message is intended for every person. I honestly just do what the fuck I want and hope the people receive it well.

7. What Is Your Definition Of Fans?

I don’t think there are too many “fans” in the game these days. I believe fans are very serious about supporting the artists they believe in. Going to the concerts, buying the records, following said artist career, etc. Nowadays people have such a limited attention span they don’t really grow with the artists and move on to the next too quickly. Fans will stick it out with their favorites.

8. Are There Any Fans Left?

I think there are very few “fans” left in this realm. Everybody is either a rapper, producer, industry type or just too cool to be a fan. I really feel sorry for this generation because they have no idea of what they are missing. Ultimately, I hope that the true fans remain that.

9. If The Fans Needed To Know How They Can Help Further Your Career, What Would You Tell Them?

Spread the word. That’s the BEST thing anyone could ever do for me. I thrive off of the word from others, and that’s the greatest form of promotion I know. If you like my cd, cool. All I ask is that you tell a friend.

10. Tell The People About What You’re Working On

Success Served Cold. Retarded. I’ve got 9th Wonder, Disco D, Illmind and Dante Ross just to name a few. Also, working on a lot of other things that you will see in the near future. This album will finally set me apart from the rat race and I am focused.

11. Name Something About This Music Business You Had To Learn The Hard Way?

That the majority of these people are snakes and you get bit often. I’m not even disappointed anymore because I know what to expect. I wish it was more music, less business.

12. Name One Record Old Or New (Any Genre) You Wish You Made. Why?

Under the Bridge by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Hands down one of the greatest songs ever written. I’ve heard that record so many times and it never gets old. I truly love the clever concept and sincerity of the song. Incredible.

13. Without Sounding Cliche, Who’s Music Do You Really Listen To?

MGMT, Lady Gaga and Eminem. Those are probably the three I listen to the most these days.

14. Before We Go. Are The Website Owners And Bloggers Being Too Biased And Political With The Music And Videos That’s Being Posted?

Hell yeah!!! Most of these sites are really on some bullshit, but you have to understand the rules before you can play the game. I used to be frustrated but nowadays I’m just like “Fuck it”. Really don’t even care. I just focus on people who got love for me, everyone else can eat a dick as far as I’m concerned.

15. Any Shout Outs, Final Thoughts?

I want to give a major shout out to Doggie Diamonds for allowing me a voice on his platform. I’d also like to thank all the fans. Couldn’t do it without ya and finally, I’d love to thank every single woman I see posted on this site. I love ya’ll…
