A Virgin Islands woman is accused of driving with her newborn baby zipped up in her purse.

The woman, who was not identified, was pulled over driving a pickup during a routine traffic stop Tuesday, The Associated Press reported.

While asking for the St. Croix woman’s license, the officer reported hearing a baby crying but did not see a baby seat in the vehicle. The woman then unzipped a purse sitting on the seat next to her and revealed a tiny newborn, according to the AP.

Police said the woman told them that the baby girl was born at home a week ago and had no prenatal care. She was apparently driving the infant to a doctor, the AP reported.

Authorities rushed the newborn to a hospital. The mother may face criminal charges, according to the AP.

“I thought I saw everything in my years of police work, but this is unbelievable,” Deputy Police Chief Christopher Howell told the St. Croix Source.

A young mother is accused of trying to kill her own baby at a hospital.

Police arrested Alexis Felton, but they’re not yet saying what drove her to try to kill her baby.

According to the police report, 22-year-old Alexis Felton walked into her 11-month-old baby’s hospital room at the Florida hospital in Orlando.

While being captured on hospital surveillance video, police say Felton choked and strangled her infant daughter six times, pausing in between and looking around.

At one point the police report gives grizzly details of how the attempted homicide played out.

“Alexis for the fifth time reaches down and chokes/strangles the child. The child again can be heard gasping for breath and choking and can seen kicking its legs in an attempt to get away.”

“Alexis lets go, looks around for the sixth time and reaches down and chokes/strangles the child.”

The incident is said to have happened inside the pediatric intensive care unit at the Florida Hospital.

News 13 learned from those close with the family of Alex Felton that the 11-month-old was being treated for respiratory problems.

After several attempts to choke the child, the police reports goes on to describe the monitors going off from the child’s room, and nurses entering.

Felton was arrested and charged with six counts of attempted homicide; however, on Thursday Judge Thomas Kirkland minimized those counts to just one charge of attempted homicide.

“I find that they are no different than when a person takes a gun and shoots a person six times, there is not a different count for each bullet,” said Judge Kirkland.

The 22-year-old mother was not in court for her first appearance on Thursday.

Felton is being held on suicide watch.

Those close to the family tell News 13 that the 11-month-old is doing ok, and did not sustain serious injuries from the assault.

A Muncie mother is accused of beating her 15-year-old son with an extension cord because he was wearing his pants too low at school.

“The kids bottoms are hanging out of their pants and its really kind of offensive to a lot of folks,” said Charles Reynolds, Associate Principal at Muncie Southside High School.

It was apparently very offensive to the boys’ mother, 40-year-old Yolanda Womack, who had to sign his disciplinary note.

According to police, Womack was so angry with her son she allegedly told him “to remove all of his clothes so she could whip him.” When the teen refused, Womack reportedly “got an extension cord and began striking him with it on his upper torso area.”

The teen managed to run to a neighbor’s house for help. When police arrived, they noticed he had substantial injuries.

“He had welts a couple of his injuries were bleeding and he was in noticeable pain,” said Sgt. Mike Engle.

The welts were across his chest, back and on both arms. He also had welts above his left eye, according to police.

“This was definitely over the top. Causing injury, that’s not acceptable,” said Engle.

Officers said Womack admitted to striking her son with an extension cord and was arrested for neglect of a dependent, a class D felony with up to 18 months behind bars.

“We were just really shocked by it,” said Reynolds. “We don’t have any troubles with the young man or the mother. We’ve never had any run-ins with the mom, she’s always been real supportive of us.”

“Disciplining a child, everybody needs to do that you just have to, there’s a limit as to how far you can go. She obviously crossed the line,” said Engle.

A Hickory County jury convicted a man from Strafford for raping a 2-year-old girl. Marlin Lane faces a prison sentence between 10 and 30 years (life) without chance of parole when he’s sentenced in May for first-degree statutory sodomy.

The jury issued the verdict on Friday. The case was moved here from Webster County to try to ensure a fair outcome. The charge was filed last year, about two years after investigators believe the abuse occurred.

Investigators say the toddler’s mother discovered what was happening when her daughter tested positive for genital herpes. Marlin Lane had the same sexually transmitted disease.

Webster County Prosecuting Attorney Danette Padgett said the young child had to take the stand but Padgett also was able to show jurors video of an interview done at a Child Advocacy Center, so the girl didn’t have to repeat all that she remembers before jurors.

(CBS) PITTSBURGH – A man was arrested for allegedly beating his girlfriend’s 11-year-old son to death because the boy hadn’t vacuumed the apartment.

Anthony Bush, 29, was taken into custody late Saturday night in connection with the death of Donovan McKee. According to ABC affiliate WTAE, authorities say Bush beat the child over eight hours, hitting him in the head, legs, arms and trunk area with wooden sticks while his mother was at work.

CBS Pittsburgh reports that the 11-year-old’s mother found him unresponsive and called 911, authorities say. McKee died at the hospital around 2:45 a.m.

Neighbors across the hall in their apartment building said they were filled with regret because they said they suspected McKee and his younger brother were being abused.

“They never came outside or nothing,” said one of the neighbors. “I knew it. I was going to call CYS and I didn’t.”

“I wish I could have done something to help,” said another.

Police said Bush told investigators he planned to discipline the 11-year-old while his mother was at work because she always stopped him when she was at home.

Police say they found the boy lying naked on the living room floor. They found blood stains on clothing and on bed sheets.

Investigators say Bush later told police he did it and it was his fault.

Police say McKee’s 5-year-old brother was not harmed. Bush is charged with murder and endangering the welfare of children.

CAMBRIDGE, Ohio – Police say an Ohio man who stuck his 3-year-old son in a clothes dryer as punishment and then turned it on is facing child endangerment charges.

The Zanesville Times Recorder reports that 40-year-old Jamial Bayly is scheduled for a video arraignment Thursday in Cambridge Municipal Court.

Guernsey County Sheriff Michael McCauley says deputies went to the Cambridge home Sunday after getting a tip from family members.

The sheriff says the father acknowledged putting the boy in the dryer earlier in the day. Deputies didn’t see any visible injuries on him. McCauley says he doesn’t know how long the boy had been in the dryer.

The sheriff says the boy was released to his mother, who wasn’t home when deputies arrived.

Cambridge Municipal Court records don’t list an attorney for Bayly.

(CNN) – A Northern California woman was arrested on suspicion of taking a bite out of two kids in the children’s section of a bookstore, police said.

Polly Beltramo, 46, of Palo Alto, is accused of biting a 2-year-old girl and a baby boy on the cheek at BookBuyers in Mountain View on Thursday, police said.

The incident began when Beltramo allegedly bit the girl, whose mother was in the children’s section of the store, witnesses said.

Bookstore owner Rammurti Reed said he heard the girl screaming and saw a red welt on her cheek.

“Suddenly a little boy, who was just a couple of months old, started screaming,” Reed told CNN affiliate KGO-TV. “I went to him and his cheek was bleeding.”

Beltramo allegedly fled the store and was later found at a nearby coffee shop, police said.

Beltramo has been arrested on felony child abuse, police said.

SOMERVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork)- An assistant middle school principal and Catholic high school volunteer was arraigned Wednesday for secretly videotaping teenage boys as they showered at a central New Jersey high school, according to the Somerset County prosecutor’s office.

Patrick J. Lott, 54, of Somerville, faces numerous charges, including child endangerment and invasion of privacy.

On Dec 13 and 16, members of the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit obtained warrants and searched Lott’s home where they seized and reviewed multiple computer files and digital recordings.

During the review of the seized files, detectives found several videos of nude teenagers showering in the Immaculata High School boys’ communal shower area, according authorities.

Nine of the teenagers identified in the videos are currently under the age of sixteen. Detectives also found the area where a camera had been secretly installed for video recording. The videos were recorded for nearly three years, starting in January 2008, authorities said.

Lott was arrested on December 23 and remains in the Somerset County Jail. Bail was set at $500,000.00 cash or bond.

As a condition of Lott’s bail, he is to have no contact with any child under the age of sixteen. Additionally, he is to have no contact with any victim or any Immaculata High School staff or faculty member.

According to the Lott is an assistant middle school principal who also volunteered at Immaculata in Somerville. He also was active in local and county politics, serving for a time as chairman of the Somerville Republican Committee.

Chicago police are investigating the posting to Facebook of a photo that appears to show a young girl with her hands and legs bound and her mouth covered with tape.

The picture, seen above, was recently posted to the Facebook page of Andre Curry, a 21-year-old Chicago man. The photo carried the notation, “This is wut happens wen my baby hits me back. ; ).”

Hours after the photo was originally posted, a Facebook friend of Curry’s wrote, “U goin to jail.” Je’Vanna Cobbins, a second Facebook friend, wrote, “really??? Dre.”

Cobbins, a Chicago resident, told TSG she believes Curry was just “playing around,” adding that, “I wouldn’t say it was child abuse.” Cobbins said that Curry–who once dated her sister–would “never do anything to harm anyone.” While noting that the image went “a bit too far,” Cobbins added that Curry was “being playful with his child. People play with their child differently.”

The disturbing image–which began to circulate online over the past several days–apparently prompted calls to cops. A Chicago Police Department spokesman today told TSG that “detectives are looking into it.”

Curry did not respond to a message sent via his Facebook page (where photos are only available to his friends).

In a phone interview, Curry’s grandmother said that he is father to a young daughter, but added that she knew nothing about the Facebook photo.

CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) -A Carlisle attorney who has joined the defense team of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky says his recent comments on the case have been taken out of context.

During an interview with abc27 News this week, attorney Karl Rominger spoke of Sandusky’s admission that he showered with boys. Rominger said that some troubled children, like those helped by The Second Mile charity, don’t have basic hygiene skills.

“Teaching a person to shower at the age of 12 or 14 sounds strange to some people, but people who work with troubled youth will tell you there are a lot of juvenile delinquents and people who are dependent who have to be taught basic life skills like how to put soap on their body,” Rominger said during the interview.

In a statement issued Thursday by Rominger and Associates, Rominger said the media accounts of his answer have become “somewhat exaggerated.”

“When answering why a person might be in a shower with a youth, I proposed one hypothetical, such as an adult leading by example and encouraging a youth with bad or poor hygiene to shower regularly,” he said in the statement.

“Some commentators have argued that I am saying that Mr. Sandusky showered with youths and touched them inappropriately for the purpose of teaching them how to shower,” Rominger said. “That is not what I said.”

“First, there’s no evidence of inappropriate touching in a shower, except for discredited statements from the grand jury presentment,” he said. “Further, Jerry has maintained his innocence and denies any sexual touching or inappropriate touching in the shower.”

“Therefore, I would like to clarify that I am not suggesting that this is what happened in this case, but was answering questions about possible motivations an individual might have for an adult to shower with a juvenile,” he said.
