The federal government has busted a pill trafficking ring in Detroit, allegedly run by a street gang known as the Hustle Boys, whose members shuttled drugs to southern states and sold them in the parking lots of fast food restaurants, according to a new indictment unsealed Thursday.

The indictment charged eight individuals with peddling Oxycontin, Opana and Vicodin from Detroit to Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky between 2007 and 2011. In Kentucky, one of the defendants worked with a man known as Gumby, who helped distribute the pills. The indictment said that many of the pills wound up in West Virginia, where dealers sold them in the parking lots of McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried Chicken

The FBI said the bust was the result of a lengthy investigation by many agencies, including the FBI, Detroit Police, State Police and members of a violent crime task force.

“Members of the Hustle Boys gang often sold illegal drugs across state lines. They employed women to deliver narcotics such as Oxycontin and to conceal those pills in condoms to avoid detection. In addition, gang members regularly engaged in violence with rival gangs,” FBI spokesman Simon Shaykhet said in a statement.

According to the indictment, the Hustle Boys gang was formed in 2007 to promote nightclub events in metro Detroit. Over the years, the group developed rivalries with other gangs, such as Knock Out Boys and the 7 Mile Bloods.

Charged in the indictment were: Mark Davis, known as M.D.; Jeron Gaskon, known as Skeet; William Crews, known as Book; Deonte Morris; Darrell Ewing, known as Apple; William Beal, Ashley Sallad and Randi Fortner.

Their hometowns were not provided.

Until the 1960s, most prisons in the United States were racially segregated. As prisons began to desegregate, many inmates organized along racial lines. The Aryan Brotherhood is believed to have been formed by a group of Irish bikers in 1964 at San Quentin State Prison, but it may have been derived from or inspired by the Bluebird Gang.

They decided to strike against the blacks who were forming their own militant group called the Black Guerrilla Family. By the 1990s the AB was less about killing for racist reasons and more about power and organized-crime activities: drugs, prostitution, hits for hire. The Aryan Brotherhood took on organized crime-like powers, and may be more powerful than the Italian crime families within the prison system. For example while incarcerated in Marion Federal Penitentiary in 1996, after being assaulted, Gambino crime family boss John Gotti allegedly asked the Aryan Brotherhood to murder his attacker. Gotti’s attacker was immediately transferred to protective custody and the planned retaliation was abandoned.

In late 2002, over 40 leaders of the gang were simultaneously rounded up from prisons all over the country and brought to trial under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). The intention was to bring death sentences for at least 21 of them, to cut off the leadership of the gang, in a manner similar to tactics used against organized crime. The case produced 30 convictions but none of the most powerful leaders received a death sentence.

Sentencing occurred in March 2006 for three of the most powerful leaders of the gang, including Barry Byron Mills (born 1948) and AB “lieutenant” Tyler “The Hulk” Bingham, who were indicted for numerous crimes, including murder, conspiracy, drug trafficking, and racketeering and for ordering killings and beatings from their cell. Bingham and Mills were convicted of murder and sent back to United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility Prison (ADX) in Florence, Colorado where they are serving life sentences with no parole, escaping the death penalty.

Prosecuting the gang has been historically difficult, because many members are already serving life sentences with no possibility of parole, so prosecutors were seeking the death penalty for 21 of those indicted but have dropped the death penalty on all but five defendants. By September 2006, the 19 inductees not eligible for the death penalty had pled guilty. The first of a series of trials involving four high level members ended in convictions in July 2006.

On 23 June 2005, after a 20-month investigation, a federal strike force raided six houses in northeastern Ohio belonging to the “Order of the Blood”, a criminal organization controlled by the Aryan Brotherhood. Thirty-four Aryan Brotherhood members or associates were arrested and warrants were issued for ten more.

The promoter claims that O’Neal hired the Main Street Mafia Crips to retrieve a tape of the basketball star cheating on his then wife, Shaunie O’Neal.

Promoter Robert Ross says that he threatened to release the tape after a dispute between the two.

Seven members of the vicious Main Street Mafia Crips have been arrested and charged with kidnapping, robbery, assault and other crimes.

The hardened street thugs allegedly abducted one-time O’Neal associate Robert Ross in his Phantom Rolls Royce on the night of the 2008 Grammy Awards — then beat and pistol-whipped him while demanding the sex tape back, according to Ross’ testimony.

Bloods gang members at Rikers Island have launched a campaign of beatings and death threats to silence fellow inmates set to testify in a murder trial, sources said.

As many as nine potential witnesses have been attacked or threatened by Bloods who fear key gang leaders could be convicted, two sources said.

Several Bloods members – and three former Rikers correction officers – go on trial this summer for the October 2008 beating death of inmate Christopher Robinson, 18.

“The Bloods leadership has passed down orders to go after anyone they think might testify,” said one law enforcement source with knowledge of the case. “They want to keep those guys off the stand.”

The case made headlines in 2009, when correction officers Michael McKie, Khalid Nelson and Denise Albright were accused of ceding control of their jail wing to a “Lord of the Flies”-style gang that killed Robinson over a commissary card.

The Bloods’ interest in the case revolves around a dozen inmates who also were charged, including three reputed gang members accused of manslaughter: Anquant Bryant, Joseph Hutchinson, and Shaddon Beswick, all 18.

At least three other reputed Bloods – including convicted killer Robert Denis, 18 – face conspiracy charges.

Lawyers for the teens did not return calls for comment.

Several defendants are high in the gang’s New York hierarchy, overseeing cliques such as the Gorilla Stone Bloods and Desperado Bloods, sources said.

“This case is a very big deal to them, because it would deplete the leadership,” the law enforcement source said.

The Bronx district attorney’s office has kept its witness list a secret, but the gang’s massive network has managed to locate and beat down witnesses locked up there and in other prisons, prosecutors said.

“The fear is that witnesses will start changing their minds instead of taking another beating – or worse,” a source in the DA’s office said.

Prosecutors had refused to hand over evidence to defense lawyers on the case until last week, fearing more witness identities would be leaked. Judge Steven Barrett told the lawyers he would kick them off the case if they divulged those names to clients.

A Correction Department spokesman said the agency is working closely with the DA to “ensure that all necessary and appropriate measures are being taken to ensure the security of the defendants and the safety of the witnesses.”

Ten out of 13 housing developments in a section of East Harlem are home to gang members, police told shocked residents last week.

Cops also said at a Community Board 11 meeting they had identified more than 300 gangbangers throughout East Harlem.

Like much of northern Manhattan, the fight against the growing number of gangs is the biggest problem for East Harlem’s police precincts, the 23rd and the 25th.

Police say the youth gang members range in age from 13 to 21.

“The residents are afraid,” said 25th Precinct Capt. Nilda Hofmann at a recent Board 11 meeting. “It’s bad right now.”

Community members agreed.

“It’s a very serious problem. The young people in our community are in a state of emergency,” said Board 11 member Nina Saxon, 31, a life-long Carver Houses resident.

“I can see it all the time. It’s really sad,” Saxon said of the youth violence and gangs. “It’s getting worse.”

Uptown residents from Harlem to Inwood were shaken last week when 14 gangbangers – including former prep school standout Afrika Owes, 17, and her ringleader boyfriend Jaquan Layne, 20 – were arrested for selling crack cocaine and running guns on W. 137th St.

Hofmann and Deputy Inspector William Pla of the 23rd Precinct told residents they are combating the growing gang population by making surprise trips to visit parents while their kids are in school to break the news to them: Your kid is in a gang.

“Everybody needs to get involved. It can’t just be the police,” said Saxon, an active leader of YouthBuild U.S.A.

One of the worst recent examples occurred in the Carver Houses, where cops busted up what they say was advertised as a “gun party.”

A tip from a resident led police to bust the alcohol- and drug-filled party, where 92 kids were inside an apartment that had no furniture.

Police recovered two guns at the party. The mother of a youth who lived in the apartment was home at the time of the party, police said.

Lisa Miller, 36, who lives in the Carver Houses, offered her suggestion for the on-going youth violence in the area.

“The parents should be more involved with their kids,” she said, walking her 13-year-old daughter home from school.

“These kids are out of control,” she said. “It’s a lot of beef; projects against projects.”

Miller says it’s hard to keep her kids safe, especially with incidents like a gun being found in the book bag of a young boy at her daughter’s elementary school.

“I’m about to take my kids down South,” Miller said.

No Crips,No Bloods,No MS-13,No Vice Lords,No Latin Kings,No Gangster Disciples made the list. Reason being ,because nobody out of them gangs ever made any significant impact on society or made any real money, none of them had movies made about them or will ever be remembered. The Top 5 are from the Mafia.

Number 1

Al Capone (1899 – 1947)

If there ever was a gangster who earned the No. 1 spot, it is Al Capone. Alphonse Capone was born in 1899 to Italian immigrants in Brooklyn, New York, where he got his start in street gangs. He then joined the Five Points gang and became a bouncer. It was during these days that a series of facial wounds earned him the “Scarface” nickname. Capone moved to Chicago in 1919 and quickly moved up the Mafia hierarchy while working for Johnny Torrio (Capone became Torrio’s protege).

It was the time of the Prohibition, and Capone ran prostitution, gambling and bootlegging rings. In 1925, at the age of 26, Capone took over after Torrio was wounded in a gang war. Known for his intelligence, flamboyance and love of public attention, Capone was also known to be very violent; his role in the orchestration of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929, in which key rival gangsters were murdered, proves this. In 1931, Federal Treasury agent Eliot Ness arrested him for tax evasion.

Featured in: Many movies have been made about Capone, but the most famous are probably The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre (1967) with Jason Robards, Capone (1975) with Ben Gazzara and The Untouchables (1987) with Robert De Niro.

Number 2

Charlie “Lucky” Luciano (1897 – 1962)

Salvatore Lucania was born in Sicily in 1897, but his family moved to New York nine years later. At a young age, he became a member of the Five Points gang, in which Al Capone also received his education. Five years after establishing an empire based mostly on prostitution, Luciano controlled the racket all over Manhattan. After a failed but brutal attack on his life in 1929, Luciano started planning the National Crime Syndicate, an extension of Salvatore Maranzano’s Commission, with Meyer Lansky.

They eliminated the competition, and by 1935, Lucky Luciano was known as the Boss of Bosses — not just of New York City, but of the whole country. He was arrested and sentenced to 30 to 50 years in 1936, but was let out on parole in 1946 on the condition that he be deported to Italy. He had so much power that U.S. Navy intelligence sought his help when the Allies were set to invade Italy during World War II. He died of a heart attack in 1962.

Featured in: Christian Slater played him in Mobsters (1991), as did Bill Graham in Bugsy (1991) and Anthony LaPaglia in the TV film Lansky (1999).

Number 3

Carlo Gambino (1902 – 1976)

Carlo Gambino came from a family that had been part of the Mafia for centuries in Italy. He started carrying out murders when he was a teenager and became a made guy in 1921 at the age of 19. With Mussolini gaining power, he immigrated to America, where his cousin Paul Castellano lived. He became a thug for different New York families until he joined Lucky Luciano’s crew.

After Luciano was extradited in the ’40s, Albert Anastasia took over. But Gambino thought it was his time to shine and had Anastasia killed in 1957. He appointed himself Boss of the family and reigned with an iron fist over New York until his natural death in 1976.

Featured in: Al Ruscio played him beautifully in the TNT movie Boss of Bosses (2001). Other “Gambino” appearances include the made-for-TV movies Between Love & Honor (1995), Gotti (1996) and Bonanno: A Godfather’s Story (1999).

Number 4

Frank Costello (1891 – 1973)

Francesco Castiglia was born in 1891 in Italy and moved to the United States with his family when he was 4. He changed his name to Frank Costello when he joined a street gang at age 13. After numerous petty crimes landed him in prison, he became best friends with Charlie Luciano; together, they dealt in bootlegging and gambling. Costello’s strength was his position as a link between the Mob and politicians, especially the Democratic Party’s Tammany Hall in New York, which enabled him and his associates to pay off certain officials.

Following Luciano’s arrest, Costello became the man in charge, and he solidified and expanded the operation during this time. A power struggle between him and Vito Genovese (who served as Underboss) erupted in the ’50s, and Vincent Gigante tried to kill Costello. Eventually, Costello grew tired of the gangster life and retired, but not before framing Genovese and Gigante for a drug bust. He died peacefully in 1973.

Featured in: The man was best portrayed by James Andronica in the 1981 miniseries The Gangster Chronicles, by Costas Mandylor in Mobsters (1991), by Carmine Caridi in Bugsy (1991), and by Jack Nicholson in The Departed (2006).

Number 5

Meyer Lansky (1902 – 1983)

Born Maier Suchowljansky in Russia to Jewish parents in 1902, Lansky moved to New York when he was 9. He met Charles Luciano when they were just schoolboys. Luciano demanded protection money from Lansky, and when he refused to pay, the two boys fought. Impressed by Lansky’s toughness, Luciano befriended the younger boy and the two remained lifelong friends. Lansky also met Bugsy Siegel when he was a teenager, and the three formed a powerful partnership. Lansky and Siegel formed the Bug and Meyer Mob, which became Murder, Inc.

Lansky’s primary order of business was money and gambling, and he had operations in Florida, Cuba and New Orleans. He was an investor in Siegel’s Las Vegas casino, and he even bought an offshore bank in Switzerland that was used for money laundering. A financial genius, he codeveloped the National Crime Syndicate and the Commission. But business is never personal, and he approved the murder of his best friend Bugsy Siegel when Siegel was unable to produce profits for the Syndicate. Even with a gambling racket in operation across the planet, Lansky never spent a day in jail.

Featured in: Not only did Richard Dreyfuss give a powerful performance in HBO’s Lansky (1999), but the character of Hyman Roth in The Godfather Part II (1974) was loosely based on him as well. The role was also played by Mark Rydell in Havana (1990), Patrick Dempsey in Mobsters (1991) and Ben Kingsley in Bugsy (1991).

Nine suspected members and associates of the Latin Kings street gang were arrested Thursday as part of a continued crackdown on gang activity in Newburgh, N.Y., by federal, state and local law enforcement.

The arrests are related to an expanded indictment that now charges 31 members or associates of the Newburgh branch of the Latin Kings with crimes including racketeering, conspiracy, assault, robbery, firearms offenses and three murders.

“Because gang violence and drug dealing on the streets of Newburgh remain intolerable, we mean to and we must put an end to the scourge that calls itself the Latin Kings,” said Preet Bharara, the U.S. Attorney in Manhattan. “They are ruthless and resilient, and as alleged, they have the blood of an innocent child on their hands.”

Nine people were arrested in the multi-agency investigation and authorities were looking for a tenth, the FBI’s New York office said Thursday. Five of those charged Thursday were already in custody on other charges.

The sweep follows up on raids by hundreds of law enforcement officers in May against suspected members of the Bloods and Latin Kings.

The new, 42-count indictment includes charges against 16 of the alleged Latin Kings members and associates previously charged in May.

The allegations include charges related to the shooting death of 15-year-old Jeffrey Zachary in Newburgh in May 2008. Mr. Bharara said he was an innocent bystander accidently killed when members of the Latin Kings were trying to shoot someone else.

The allegations also include charges related to the attempted murders of two rival gang members in Newburgh in November 2009 and January 2010, Mr. Bharara said.
