Police were searching Monday for a 17-year-old suspect with a knack for getting away.
He escaped from police custody over the weekend by jumping out of a law enforcement van and running away. It was caught on video by a woman who was driving behind the police van when it stopped.
“That’s crazy because I thought you couldn’t get out of the inside of a police vehicle,” said the woman, who did not want to be identified.
She described how the subject used the chance to jump out and run, even still handcuffed.
“The doors popped opened, and he just went running down the street,” she said.
Milwaukee police said the 17-year-old was picked up Sunday for stealing a car.
The suspect was accused of a violent crime spree last year. A woman who answered the door Monday said he wasn’t there, and she didn’t want to talk about it.
A criminal complaint said in December 2015, the suspect stole a car on Milwaukee’s east side and held the driver at gunpoint. He and others took officers on a chase in Glendale and Milwaukee, police said.
